As part of the Social Association's Organic September, we are shining a light on some of our organic stars. Now is the turn of the fabulous Bumbaloo leggings. A mama-run business using gorgeously soft organic materials to create a line of on-trend, unisex leggings for your little people. We caught up with one of these businesses and Vanessa, the mama behind the brand, to learn a little bit more about her inspiration and how she manages to juggle motherhood, work and a new business.
What led to the start of Bumbaloo and what is your inspiration?
"I was trying to think a business idea that I could realistically achieve. Baby/children’s fashion was an interest I had after having my baby boy and leggings were always something I would dress Arthur in. They are so soft and versatile. Boy’s leggings were not always easily found on the high street and I would shop from other small businesses and online stores. Being able to choose fabrics and designs that I would like to see as leggings is the fun part and my hopes are that I can grow a successful and credible business."
What is your favourite thing to do on a "day off"? (There aren't very many these with your own business!)
"Between being a mum, working part-time and working on my business we get 1 day off a week as a family so we always make plans. Our favourite thing to do is find a walk, usually a few miles long, and end up in a pub or tea room. Arthur is happiest outdoors which in my experience, happy child means happy parents."
Why did you choose organic for your designs?
"Before setting up my own business I shopped similar products and was always so impressed with the quality and feel of organic cotton jersey. Theres nothing nicer than a baby wearing soft organic cotton with the benefit of being kind to the environment as well as on your babies skin."
Any top tips for juggling a successful business and parenthood?
"I have become a fan of lists as I find it motivates me when I get to tick things as done. It's all about good time-management which I'm still learning to do, if I know I have a few hours spare in the week I think to myself what do I need to achieve and just hope I don't get distracted."
If you were marooned on a desert island, which 3 things would you take with you?
"I don't know if this is cheating but I would take a TV, Netflix and power supply. I love a good box set."
Who are your favourite children's brands at the moment?
"I have been a fan of Tobias and the Bear since Arthur was born and love seeing their designs each season. I also love Retro Kids for fun stuff, I will soon be changing Arthur's nursery to a big boys bedroom and I have started making a list of things I think would look great."
